FACTS ABOUT HORSE CARRIAGE RIDES

Imagine how exhausted you get when you walk up a steep hill. Horses are forced to drag heavy carriages and people all over the city, often climbing steep streets.

Horses are made to work long hours in all types of weather, battle traffic, breathe exhaust fumes from buses, trucks and cars. Many horses are not adequately watered, since the sight of a horse urinating is "bad for business".

Carriage horses are exposed to bitter cold and scorching heat. Horses often suffer from dehydration and heat stress and can die in just a few hours.

Some cities outlaw carriage rides when the temperature reaches a certain degree, but this is rarely, if ever enforced.

Many accidents, injuries, and even deaths (to horses and humans) have been caused by horses becoming "spooked" in traffic.
